The Artificial Turf Installation Process

What actually goes into a quality turf installation in St. George — and why the prep work matters more than the turf itself.

Overview

A high-quality artificial lawn isn't just laying down carpet. The finished look, drainage, and longevity depend on careful site preparation and a proper base. This is the stage-by-stage process a professional installer follows.

The Stages

  1. Site evaluation & removal — the installer assesses your yard, then removes the existing grass, topsoil, or old surface to expose a clean base. Edging and trim are handled at this stage.
  2. Base layer & grading — a crushed rock or aggregate base is spread and compacted, and the area is graded so water drains away from the house and low spots. This is the single most important step for drainage and a smooth finish.
  3. Drainage & weed control — depending on the site, the installer may add a weed barrier and confirm drainage paths so water doesn't puddle on top of or under the turf.
  4. Turf layout — turf is cut to the yard's shape, with seams joined carefully for high-traffic areas. Pile direction is kept consistent so the lawn looks uniform.
  5. Securing & seams — the turf is secured around edges and at seams with appropriate tape and fasteners, around curves, borders, and features like trees.
  6. Infill — sand (or another infill) is spread evenly and brushed into the turf to hold blades upright, add weight, and improve drainage and feel.
  7. Final brushing & cleanup — the whole area is brushed and raked, debris is removed, and the yard is handed over ready to use.

How Long Does It Take?

Most residential installs take a few days depending on size, access, grading, and drainage. Larger or more complex projects run longer. An installer will give a realistic timeline after a site visit.
